Yeondam is a matchmaking service. To do our work well, we need to know you — and you need to trust us with what you tell us. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, how we protect it, and the choices you have.
1. Who we are and what this policy covers
This policy applies to personal information collected, used, and disclosed by YEONDAM 연담 緣談 Matchmaking (“Yeondam”, “we”, “us”), Suite 219 – 4501 North Road, Burnaby, British Columbia V3N 4R7, Canada.
Yeondam is a sole proprietorship operating a business in British Columbia and handles personal information in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act (British Columbia) (“PIPA”). Under PIPA, we collect, use, and disclose personal information only for purposes that a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the circumstances, and only with your consent unless the law allows otherwise.
This policy covers our website, the consultation request form, consultations, membership, verification, profile writing, introductions, and follow-up. It applies to prospective members, members, and anyone else whose personal information we handle in the course of our service (for example, a member’s family members, where a member tells us about them).
2. What we collect
We collect only what we need for the purpose at hand, and we ask for more only as our relationship with you deepens.
a. When you send a consultation request through our website
- Your name, phone number, and email address (required)
- Your KakaoTalk ID, the categories that describe you, your availability, and any message you choose to leave (optional)
- The date and time of your request and the IP address it was sent from, which our system records with the request
b. During your consultation
What you tell us about your life, your thoughts on marriage, the relationship you hope for, and what matters to you. We take notes so that we can serve you accurately.
c. If you become a member
With your separate, written consent given at the time you join, we collect the information needed to verify who you are, write your profile, and make suitable introductions. Depending on your circumstances this may include:
- Identity documents and proof of residence
- Marital status and relationship history, including any prior marriage, divorce, or bereavement
- Education, occupation, and employment
- Immigration or residency status in Canada
- Family information, including children and dependants
- Financial information, such as income, assets, and debts
- Health and lifestyle information
- Your values, views on married life, and the kind of partner you hope to meet
- Photographs
Some of this information is sensitive. We collect financial, health, and similar sensitive information only where it is necessary and reasonable for the service, and only with your express consent. You may decline to provide particular information; we will tell you if that limits what we can do for you.
d. Information about other people
In telling us about yourself you may tell us about others — parents, children, a former spouse. We collect only what is needed to understand your situation, and we handle it with the same care as your own information.
3. How we use your information
We use personal information to:
- Respond to your request and arrange a consultation
- Assess whether Yeondam is a suitable service for you, and whether you meet our membership criteria
- Enter into and administer a membership agreement with you
- Verify identity and key information you have provided (see section 4)
- Write your profile and identify potential matches
- Propose and arrange introductions and meetings, and gather your feedback afterward
- Communicate with you about your membership
- Respond to safety concerns, complaints, and disputes
- Meet our legal and regulatory obligations
We do not sell personal information. We do not use it for advertising, and we will not send you marketing messages unless you have asked for them. If we ever wish to use your information for a purpose not described here, we will ask for your consent first.
4. Verification
Verification is a core part of our service, and it is always done with your knowledge. We confirm identity and key information against the documents and questionnaire you provide, and we tell you in advance what will be verified and how it will be used.
Verification is limited to what can be verified from the materials provided. Where something cannot be verified, we say so. Yeondam does not conduct covert investigations, and we do not obtain credit, criminal-record, or medical information from third parties without your separate, express consent.
5. Sharing with other members
Introductions involve sharing information about you with another member, and vice versa. We do this in stages, and only as far as you have agreed.
- Before a first introduction, we share only a brief profile that you have reviewed and approved.
- After a first meeting, if both of you wish to continue, we share a more detailed profile — and only with the consent of both people. You will know what is being shared and when.
- If either person does not consent, the detailed information is not shared.
Members agree, as a condition of membership, to keep in confidence the personal information they learn about another member and not to use it for any other purpose. Misuse of another member’s information may result in restricted service or termination of membership.
6. Other disclosures
Apart from other members as described above, we disclose personal information only in these circumstances:
- Service providers. We use third-party services to host our website, deliver email, and store documents. These providers may process personal information on our behalf, only as needed to provide their service to us. Some of these providers store data on servers outside Canada, where it may be accessible to the authorities of that country under local law.
- Legal requirements. We may disclose information where required by law, by a court order, or by a lawful request from a public authority, and only to the extent required.
- Safety. Where we reasonably believe disclosure is necessary to protect the safety of a member or another person, we may disclose information to the extent permitted by PIPA.
- With your consent, for any other purpose.
7. Consent and withdrawing consent
By submitting a consultation request, you consent to our collecting and using the information in it to respond to you and arrange a consultation. Membership information is collected only with your separate, written consent, which describes what will be collected, why, and with whom it may be shared.
You may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us (section 14). We will explain the consequences: withdrawing consent may mean we can no longer provide some or all of our service to you, and information we are required by law or by our agreement with you to keep may be retained for the period described in section 8.
8. How long we keep information
- Consultation requests that do not lead to membership are kept for up to twelve months after our last contact with you, and then securely deleted.
- Membership information is kept for the duration of your membership and for as long as needed afterward to meet our legal obligations and to deal with any dispute — generally no longer than two years after your membership ends, after which it is securely deleted or destroyed.
- Where we have used your personal information to make a decision that directly affects you, PIPA requires us to keep that information for at least one year after the decision, so that you can request access to it.
9. How we protect information
We take reasonable security measures appropriate to the sensitivity of the information. These include limiting access to staff who need it, password-protected and encrypted devices and accounts, secure (HTTPS) transmission on our website, locked storage for paper documents, and secure destruction of documents that are no longer needed.
No method of storage or transmission is completely secure. If we become aware of a breach involving your personal information that could reasonably be expected to cause you significant harm, we will notify you and, where required, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.
10. Your rights
Under PIPA you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you, learn how we have used it, and learn to whom we have disclosed it
- Correct personal information that is inaccurate or incomplete
- Withdraw consent to our collection, use, or disclosure of your information, subject to legal and contractual limits
- Ask questions or make a complaint about how we handle personal information
To exercise any of these rights, contact our Privacy Officer (section 14). We will respond within 30 business days, as PIPA requires, and we may need to confirm your identity before releasing information. There is no charge for a correction request; a modest fee may apply to an access request, and we will tell you in advance if so.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia (PO Box 9038, Stn. Prov. Govt., Victoria, BC V8W 9A4 · 250-387-5629).
11. Website, cookies, and third-party services
Our website does not set cookies of its own and does not use analytics or advertising trackers. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP address, browser type, and pages requested) for security and troubleshooting.
The website loads fonts from Google Fonts and embeds a Google Map of our office. When your browser loads these, Google may receive your IP address and set its own cookies, subject to Google’s privacy policy. Links to Google Maps and other external sites take you to services we do not control.
12. Age
Our service is for adults aged 25 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 19. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version will always be posted on this page with its effective date. If a change significantly affects how we use your information, we will let members know directly.
14. Contact
Questions, requests for access or correction, withdrawal of consent, and complaints should be directed to our Privacy Officer:
